Which Hyundai Tucson Trims Have a Turbo Engine, and Do They Use a CVT?

Two answers, and one of them surprises people. The turbo lives only in the Tucson Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. And no Tucson uses a CVT, in any trim, with any powertrain.

The Short Version

If you only read this far, read this far. Both questions have clean answers, and the second one is the reason a lot of shoppers cross the Tucson off a list they should not have.

Which trims are turbocharged?

The Hybrid and the Plug-in Hybrid. All six of them.

Both electrified Tucsons run a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder. The six gas trims all share the same naturally aspirated 2.5L. There is no turbo gas Tucson for 2026.

Does any Tucson use a CVT?

No. Not one of them.

Gas trims use an 8-speed automatic. The Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid use a 6-speed automatic. All three are geared automatics with real fixed ratios, and all three carry SHIFTRONIC manual mode.

Engine and Transmission by Trim

Every figure below comes from Hyundai's own compare-specs tool, checked on September 8, 2026. Three tables, because the Tucson is really three vehicles wearing one badge.

2026 Tucson, Gas

TrimStarting MSRPEngineTurboTransmission
SE$29,7002.5L 4-cylinder, 187 hpNo8-speed automatic
SEL$31,0502.5L 4-cylinder, 187 hpNo8-speed automatic

XRT$33,7252.5L 4-cylinder, 187 hpNo8-speed automatic
SEL Premium$34,0502.5L 4-cylinder, 187 hpNo8-speed automatic
Limited$39,6752.5L 4-cylinder, 187 hpNo8-speed automatic

Front-wheel drive is standard on every gas trim. HTRAC all-wheel drive is optional across the line.

2026 Tucson Hybrid

TrimStarting MSRPEngineTurboTransmission
SE$31,3001.6L turbo plus electric motor, 231 hp combinedYes6-speed automatic

SEL Convenience$35,2501.6L turbo plus electric motor, 231 hp combinedYes6-speed automatic
Limited$42,4251.6L turbo plus electric motor, 231 hp combinedYes6-speed automatic

The hybrid is not all-wheel drive only for 2026. Front-wheel drive is standard and HTRAC all-wheel drive is optional, which is a change worth knowing if you shopped a Tucson Hybrid a year or two ago.

2026 Tucson Plug-in Hybrid

SEL$40,6751.6L turbo plus electric motor, 268 hp combinedYes6-speed automatic
Limited$48,9001.6L turbo plus electric motor, 268 hp combinedYes6-speed automatic

HTRAC all-wheel drive is standard on both Plug-in Hybrid trims. EPA rates the Plug-in Hybrid at 32 miles of electric range and 77 MPGe.

Starting MSRP excludes destination and handling, taxes, title, registration and dealer fees. MSRP figures are Hyundai's published starting prices as of September 8, 2026 and can change without notice.

What the Turbo Actually Buys You

The gas Tucson's 2.5L makes 187 hp at 6,100 rpm and 178 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. Those are honest numbers for a compact SUV, and the peak torque sits high in the rev range.

The turbocharged 1.6L in the Hybrid makes 178 hp on its own, so the engine alone is not the story. Its 195 lb-ft arrives from 1,500 rpm and holds to 4,500 rpm. Add the 64-hp electric motor and the system makes 231 hp and 271 lb-ft.

The Plug-in Hybrid uses the same turbo engine with a bigger 97-hp motor and a 13.8-kWh battery, for 268 hp and 271 lb-ft.

What you feel is not the peak number. It is where the torque lives. Pulling onto US 15-501 or merging on I-40, the electrified Tucsons have their full twist available almost immediately, and the gas car has to wind up for it.

Why People Assume There Is a CVT, and Why There Is Not

The assumption is reasonable. The compact SUV class leans hard on continuously variable transmissions, and the 2026 Nissan Rogue, to name one direct rival, uses an Xtronic CVT as its only transmission. Plenty of shoppers who dislike how a CVT behaves under load have learned to just assume the whole segment is that way.

The Tucson is not. The gas car uses a conventional 8-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC. The Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid use a conventional 6-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC. A geared automatic has fixed ratios, so it steps between them, and you hear and feel the shifts.

Note that the Tucson Hybrid is a parallel hybrid, which is why it can use a normal geared automatic at all. Its electric motor sits between the engine and the transmission. That is a different layout from the power-split hybrids that use an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, where there is no conventional gearbox to speak of.

One more tell, and it is right in front of you in the cabin: the paddles. Paddle shifters are standard on the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid, and on the gas Limited. On the electrified cars they do double duty, adjusting regenerative braking in ECO and Smart modes. A CVT has no gears to pick.

The Trade the Turbo Asks For

Two of them, and both are worth saying plainly rather than burying.

First, towing. The turbocharged Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid are rated at 2,000 lbs with trailer brakes. The naturally aspirated gas Tucson is rated 2,750 lbs. If you pull a small utility trailer or a pair of jet skis to Jordan Lake, the cheaper, non-turbo car is the one rated to do more of it.

Second, price. The turbo only comes attached to a hybrid system, so the cheapest way into a turbocharged Tucson is the Hybrid SE, which starts above every gas trim below XRT. You are not buying a turbo option box. You are buying a different drivetrain.

Fuel economy runs the other way, and by a lot. EPA rates the gas Tucson at 28 mpg combined in front-wheel drive and 26 combined with all-wheel drive. The Hybrid is rated up to 38 mpg combined. Over a Triangle commute that gap adds up faster than the spec sheet makes it look.

If you want to sit in all three before deciding, they are usually on the lot together. Start with the new Tucson inventory, or look at the whole Hyundai hybrid and EV lineup if the electrified side is what you are really shopping. Inventory moves weekly, so call ahead if you want a specific powertrain held.

Tucson Engine and Transmission Questions We Get in Durham

Which Hyundai Tucson trims have a turbo engine?

Every Tucson Hybrid and every Tucson Plug-in Hybrid trim uses a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder. That covers the Hybrid SE, SEL, SEL Convenience and Limited, plus the Plug-in Hybrid SEL and Limited. No gas-only Tucson is turbocharged. All six gas trims use the same naturally aspirated 2.5L four-cylinder.

Does the Hyundai Tucson use a CVT?

No. No 2026 Tucson of any powertrain uses a CVT. The gas Tucson uses an 8-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC. The Hybrid and the Plug-in Hybrid both use a 6-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC. All three are conventional geared automatics with fixed ratios and real shift points.

Is the turbocharged Tucson Hybrid faster than the gas Tucson?

It has more power on paper. The gas Tucson makes 187 hp and 178 lb-ft. The Hybrid combines its 1.6L turbo with an electric motor for 231 hp and 271 lb-ft, and the Plug-in Hybrid reaches 268 hp and 271 lb-ft. The bigger difference in normal driving is the torque, which arrives much lower in the rev range.

Does the turbo engine require premium fuel?

The Tucson Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid are rated on regular unleaded by the EPA, the same as the gas Tucson. Check the fuel filler door and the owner's manual on the specific vehicle you are buying, since that label is the authority for the car in front of you.

What does SHIFTRONIC mean on the Tucson?

SHIFTRONIC is Hyundai's name for the manual-shift mode on its automatic transmissions. You move the selector across into a manual gate, or use the paddles where they are fitted, and choose gears yourself. It is a feature of a geared automatic, and it is one of the plainest signals that the Tucson is not a CVT.

Does the Tucson have paddle shifters?

The Hybrid and the Plug-in Hybrid have steering-wheel paddles as standard, and they also adjust regenerative braking in ECO and Smart modes. On the gas Tucson, paddles are not fitted on the SE or SEL. The gas Limited does have them.

How much does the turbocharged Tucson tow?

The turbocharged Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid are rated at 2,000 lbs with trailer brakes. The naturally aspirated gas Tucson is rated higher, at 2,750 lbs with trailer brakes. Every Tucson is rated at 1,650 lbs without trailer brakes. More power does not always mean more towing.

Which one should I drive first at your Durham store?

Drive the gas SEL and the Hybrid SEL back to back on the same route. Take them out on US 15-501 and then through the stop-and-go around New Hope Commons, because that mix is where the two feel least alike. Half an hour tells you more than any spec table on this page, including ours.
