There is no single best Santa Fe year, because the model changed shape twice in the space a used shopper is looking at. What there is: three clear answers to three different questions.

The last year of the fourth generation. It carries everything the 2021 update brought, with the generation fully sorted, and gas, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid were all on the menu by then. Five seats only.
The value pick
2020
The pre-update fourth generation. Simple, conventional powertrains, an 8-speed automatic, and Rear Occupant Alert made standard across the range that year. The most Santa Fe per dollar in a used listing.
If you need seven seats
2024 or newer
The fifth generation, and the only Santa Fe in this window with a third row. It is longer, taller and boxier, and the third row is standard rather than an option you have to hunt for.
What Changed, Year by Year

They assume it has a third row. It is a mid-size Hyundai SUV with a family reputation, so the assumption is fair, and for a stretch of years it is wrong.
Hyundai dropped the three-row Santa Fe XL after 2019, when the Palisade took over that job. From 2019 through 2023, every Santa Fe seats five. The third row only came back with the 2024 redesign, where it is standard.
So if you are shopping with three kids or a regular carpool in mind, that single fact narrows your search more than any reliability ranking will. Either you are shopping 2024 and newer, or you are looking at a Palisade instead.
It works in your favour too. If you do not need seven seats, the 2019 to 2023 cars are a lot of mid-size SUV for the money precisely because some shoppers pass on them for a row they were never going to use.
The Two Generations, Side by Side
You can tell them apart from across a car park once you know what you are looking at, and that is the single most useful thing on this page. Both of these were photographed on our own lot in Durham.
If the car in the listing has the boxy roofline on the right, it has a third row. If it has the rounded shape on the left, it seats five, whatever the listing says. That one glance is faster than reading a spec sheet.

Hyundai's 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain coverage is one of the best-known things about the brand. It is also the single most misunderstood thing in a used Hyundai listing, and it can be worth more than the difference between two model years.
The 10-year or 100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty belongs to the original owner and does not transfer. If you buy a used Santa Fe from a private seller, powertrain components are covered under the 5-year or 60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty instead, measured from the original in-service date. A transfer to a spouse is the one exception Hyundai makes.
Read that against a real example. A 2021 Santa Fe first sold in spring 2021 is already past five years from its in-service date. Bought privately, its powertrain coverage has run out. That is not a defect in the car. It is a term in the warranty, and nothing about the vehicle tells you it happened.
There is one route that puts the long coverage back, and it is the reason certified cars cost more.
Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned
Carries a 10-year or 100,000-mile CPO Powertrain Limited Warranty measured from the vehicle's original in-service date, plus whatever remains of the 5-year or 60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Passes a 173-point mechanical, safety and appearance inspection. A $50 deductible applies per covered repair visit, and rental reimbursement runs up to $35 a day for up to 10 days.
Shop Certified Pre-OwnedTraditional Used
Any make, any model, priced accordingly. Coverage is whatever is left of the original factory terms, which for a second owner means the 5-year or 60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty rather than the 10-year powertrain. Often the right call on an older or higher-mileage vehicle where the certified premium is not worth it. We will tell you which side of that line a given car falls on.

None of this is Santa Fe-specific paranoia. It is the short list that separates a good used purchase from an expensive one, on any vehicle, and it takes about twenty minutes.
- Run the VIN for open recalls, and confirm the work was done. A recall being announced is not the same as a recall being closed. The NHTSA recall lookup is free and takes a minute. Any dealer, including ours, can confirm completion from the VIN.
- Ask for service records, not reassurance. A folder of receipts is worth more than a low odometer reading. Where a car has been serviced matters less than whether it has been.
- Check the year's safety ratings for the exact trim. Ratings shift between model years and sometimes between trims within a year. IIHS publishes them by year, free.
- Sit in the second row before you sign. Seat angle and headroom changed between generations. Thirty seconds in the back seat answers a question no spec sheet does.
- On a Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid, ask when it was last driven. A car that has sat for months behaves differently on the first drive than one in regular use. Worth knowing what you are feeling.
- Match the coverage to the calendar. Work out where the vehicle sits against both the year count and the mileage count, since coverage ends at whichever arrives first.
